AIR DEPARTMENT SAFETY OFFICER WORKSHOP
If your air department has incorporated a Safety Management System (SMS), you already realize one of your team must be assigned the duties of Safety Officer. While this sounds great on paper, working out exactly what this means to your operation and to the person assigned can be a bit more of a challenge than you know. More often, newly minted Safety Officers are at a loss for knowing what their job really is and how they actually go about making daily flight operations safer. 
The Squadron has developed the Air Department Safety Officer (ADSO) Workshop as part of our Safety Assurance Program (SAP) to help meet this challenge and to empower ADSOs with the skills and knowledge they need to really make a difference to their organization and get the most out of your SMS. 
The workshop runs for 2 packed days and focuses on the real aspects of performing this role. This is a vocational syllabus taught by two to four instructors and includes titles from “Safety is not for the weak!” to “What if it still happens?”. The instruction is a mix of interactive presentations to give the macroscopic picture of Safety and role play exercises to allow the students to learn from experience. 
Our instructors are highly experienced Flight Safety Officers, having performed the role in both the military and commercial sectors. They are not professors or administrators, but operational pilots that know the pressures and limits that pilots and maintenance forces face everyday - and that’s why their lessons are so relevant. 
We do not aim to make you a Flight Safety expert or an Accident Investigator, as that is not what is called for in the performance of your duties. What our students will come away is a sound knowledge base and some experience in performing their safety officer duties. 
It’s a unique opportunity to have your eyes opened to the way that The Squadron approaches safety to place the mission first while also learning some valuable skills that are tried and true to increase your organization’s efficiency and lower costs!
